SCI Lt. T'Lira

(Silly me, I forgot about the logs...)

T'Lira still was uncomfortable with shipboard life. It had been years since she'd last been posted full time to a ship. It had been since... since shortly before the Hobus Supernova.
A small part of her wondered about her son, Taril, and how he was doing on Earth. Another part of her wondered about her family and yet another part was almost... petrified about losing her life in the line of duty and...
Wait, why was she thinking about that now? She'd never given death much though, even in the Dominion War's darkest days. Sometimes, she even forgot her mortality.
Could it be Taril? Could she be... dare she say it... scared about what would happen to him in the event of her death?
T'Lira mentally shook herself and focused on her work. Alignment of grappler launchers... oh, why didn't she take the engineering extension courses her father recommended when she had the chance?
Making a mental note to do so soon, she entered a few calculations into her own PADD and made a self-note to call Taril as soon as this was over, and then call her family. Possibly her betrothed afterwards... no, he would be too busy.
"Wright to T'Lira."
Mentally cursing herself, T'Lira reached for her commbadge to answer.

Issac Asmiov.
From her studies, T'Lira had figured out that he was a rather famous Earth author who had written much in the topic of this... science fiction, as Ensign Ilairh had explained. How could science be fictional? Anyway, after asking an old acquaintance from the Academy, she now was reading one of his more popular stories on and off when she had time. It was illogical to do so while she was working, but as her roommate had once termed it, she had "the heart of a scientist", whatever that meant. She found it mildly pleasing to bend the rules for once. All of this was being done while on duty, which was not technically permitted by any means. However, she could not read more than two pages, even with her fast reading pace. There was too much to do and this was far too critical of a mission to slack off, if that was the correct term.
Even while programming the grapplers, her mind still wandered back to her son. He had all but begged to come aboard the Atlantis one time, just to visit. She decided to appease him until she could find a stable assignment by allowing him a visit the next time the Atlantis had a relatively calm shore leave.
Perhaps she should consider... no, that just wouldn't do.
T'Lira shook her head minutely and continued on her work, banishing all distracting thoughts to her subconsious for the time being. There was a station to save and little time to do so. As a random thought, she mentally quoted something an old human friend from Vulcan had always said as something of a joke.

Coming along nicely there, Cadet.... :)

Would you mind editing the subject of your log post to give the log a title? It helps my site scraper pick these up. :)

The crush can launch was well underway and all was proceeding according to plan. For now, at least. It was a human who had once said "The best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley." Hopefully, it would not be proven true.
Hope... where had that come from? It was an illogical emotion, yet it seemed to save many a day. Perhaps it would warrant a later study. Even so, it was only logical to believe that this plan would go well, considering the effort put into carrying it out, by the entire crew and the miners. In this case, hope had gone a long way towards fulfilling the goals of this mission.
Now, as T'Lira tapped a few keys on her PADD, she noticed a message from her parents. Most likely informing her of her father's newest paper or of a sibling's achievement. Perhaps one day they would write to the others of an accomplishment of hers. They never had approved of her joining Starfleet. But it was done. She did not mind that her siblings obeyed their parent's wishes and left her to carry her own path. As an instructor had once said, one can only live life if they live it on their own terms.
Even so, it would only be a short time before her family would discover that she had returned to Starfleet against their express wishes. She would, as the humans said, "catch hell" for her decision. That was acceptable in her eyes. She was an adult, and within her right to make her own decisions. Her parents were rather conservative anyway and that had imprinted upon her sibling, which is why she refused to allow her family to watch after her son while she was away. However illogical her decision was, it was best for all involved.
As she ignored the message and stored it for later perusal, her mind wandered to what the next days might bring.
