Rojer really disliked dealing with shape shifting creatures, this week Vendorians in particular. He was sure they were nice enough beings, but they should really keep to their own shape.

Though, somehow he preferred Vendorians over Bronson. That man made Rojer’s skin crawl. He knew too much too, and he was Section 31, which made it worse. At least he had a bit of a conversation with Joanne across the bridge. She would look into some things and he had his own matters to deal with.

As he was walking down to sickbay to ask Isabelle about the Captain’s request, he pondered the ethical objections he may or may not encounter. Yes, they were interfering with the creature’s abilities, but he doubted the Captain wanted it to be a permanent effect. That would be too much for him. But to temporarily cause the creature to revert to its natural shape shouldn’t raise too many protestations.

At least Danann seemed to be getting the sleep she needed. He wondered what her state of mind would be after this.

Rojer actually swiped a few times at his chair before sitting down, as if he could wipe Bronson’s presence from the seat. If he could have tipped the chair to dump the man on the floor, he would have done it if he thought he could get away with it, and the chair wasn’t bolted to the floor. As chipper as Danann was (and it was damned creepy), his mood was just as black. He didn’t trust anything that Bronson had to say, but he didn’t know everything and that made him feel defensive.

At least the Captain alleviated the “boredom” by filling him in on what was going on. This of course didn’t improve his mood at all. He wondered if he could get away with a hit on Admiral Harpy… it wouldn’t be THAT difficult to get rid of her after all. He sighed and put the thought to one side and prepared to deal with the business of the ship while the Captain dealt with the more Captainly stuff that needed his attention.

He felt the Big Chair loom over him again and fought the urge to duck and run.

Rojer looked around their quarters. Things have been kinda hectic of late and it looked like every item of clothing and piece of uniform they owned between the two of them were accumulated in the lounge.

“Ethan, I guess we should be doing something about this,” he said unenthusiastically. He got a grunt as reply. “I’m serious. We’re not at war, we’re not saving the galaxy from marauding bio-whatsits-thingies trying to kill us, we don’t have to worry about Danann diving head first into a vat of alcohol (as far as I can tell), so would it kill either of us to actually make your living spaces something actually worth living in?”

Ethan looked up from where he was lying on the couch, PADD in hand. “Hire a maid?” he asked hopefully. The look he received squashed that idea. He dropped the PADD on the floor, earning another frown, then sighed while getting up and stooping to pick up the offending device. “What is my reward?” he asked.

“Drinking with the Captain. We owe the Gul a toast and that bottle of whiskey is waiting.” Rojer gave a sad smile and started cleaning up, Ethan wordlessly joining him without further protest.

When the orders came through that they would be handling a first contact mission, Rojer was excited. This doesn’t happen very often and it was a great honour for the Hyperion to get this assignment.

Then all the things that could go wrong started popping into his head and he lost all excitement for the mission. He and Ethan had discussed all the possibilities that they could think of between the two of them, but he knew from experience that nothing they planned for now would actually be what they encounter.

Now he sat in his chair on the bridge, preparing the ship for First Contact protocols and wondering what they would encounter.
