Ensign Elijah Stark - OPS U.S.S. HYPERION

“This bitch needs to die.”

Eli grimaced as the words passed unbidden through his mind. They were hours away from orbit of one of many pleasure worlds and they were definitely in need of some R&R. The Hyperion had long deposited Adria with another ship to be ferried to her eventual fate, but the events of the past few weeks clung to the ship like a plague cloud. The brutality of the incident had been sealed with the death of Lt.Cmdr. Danann’s unborn child and the entire ship seemed to be in mourning.

However, that wasn’t what weighed on him, tragic as it was. It was the effect his time on the Hyperion had done to him, the changes that in reflection both shocked and shamed him. He leaned forward, letting the hot water fall on his aching neck, hoping for some relief. For as long as he could remember, Starfleet had been his dream, the chance to travel the stars, to discover the unknown and do the impossible. He knew it was a romanticized notion; the dreams of a child, but the desire hadn’t changed as he grew.

“She needs to die.”

It didn’t matter that the rest of the crew had agreed at the time, they were still his words, his thoughts. Eli had been raised on the belief that, imperfect though it may be, the Federation was built on peace and diplomacy, not violence and hatred. Adria’s desire, the core of her entire design, had been to show the galaxy that was a lie. She believed the Federation was at its core corrupt, selfish, violent and greedy and when it came down to it they would do anything to protect their peaceful “façade”.

And she had almost been right. For one moment she had succeeded, at least with the Hyperion. For a moment, they were ready to give in to vengeance and throw away their oath to the Federations ideals. For a moment, they had given in and she had won.

Or maybe it was just you?

The thought burned through his brain and he clenched his fists with indignation and shame. He toweled himself off and pulled on a fresh uniform despite being off shift. That was ultimately what stung his conscience, the real issue. Despite everything, he couldn’t really attest to the rest of the crew, the only thoughts and desires he could confirm were his own. He had allowed himself to be changed by everything that had happened since he’d joined the Hyperion and the onus was on him. He wanted to have an excuse, or at least company in the erosion of his convictions, but the blame was his and his alone.

Eli nodded to himself as he poured a glass of water instead of the whiskey had had been slowly consuming over the last few days, a conscious decision on his future course. He wasn’t going to slip any further; this was the end of the line. The blame was his, but so was the responsibility to make it right. Whatever methods the Hyperion crew might employ, whatever compromises they might forgive with the Federations ideals was on them. The only thing he could do was follow his conscience and conviction and do what was right.

And he knew exactly where to start.

Dinner with the Captain had been blessedly uneventful, at least on Starks end. He had managed some small talk, even given his opinion on a debate or two Rome and Danann had engaged in. While he could be wrong, the walk back to his quarters after had left him with the impression it had been some kind of test…like Rome had been sizing him up. He’d had relatively little contact with Rome since joining the Hyperion; He’d left on his “mission” not long after Eli had arrived. It made sense that he’d want to get to know any new crew, nothing sinister in that….right?

Eli grimaced at the creeping paranoia and groaned as he fell onto the small sofa in his quarters. He lay there for a few minutes, letting the tension seep out of him, then flipped over onto his side and pulled the large padd off the small coffee able. Quickly typing in the encrypted key, he opened the TRUTH file and flipped through the files. There wasn’t much to it yet, he was still waiting on responses from a few of the people he’d reached out to. Patience was the name of the game now, and the last thing he wanted to do was set off anyone’s spy senses….particularly Danann’s.

He flipped open another file, the first he’d made when creating the project. Inside were all his misgivings about the crew, in particularly the command staff over the last few months. Lyon’s disregard for fleet regulations regarding non-active personnel accessing prisoners in custody, Rome’s deactivation of the brigs sensor and protective measures, the failure to prevent Danann’s confrontation and assault on a prisoner in custody and the blatant disregard for Starfleet regulations and even Federation law regarding incarceration and transport of apprehended criminals. He stopped at the last section regarding Danann’s incident, a part of him feeling guilty for adding it considering his own vocalizations towards Adria.

He pulled up a few of the response he’d gotten back from his scant contacts, mostly friends in various parts of Starfleet and the Federation’s governmental branches. It was obvious the crew where decent people for the most part, even commendable, but the secrecy and shadow games being played with what had happened after Adria’s capture had left a bad taste in his mouth. For a crew to work together there had to be trust, and right now trust was a limited commodity. Regulations and laws existed for a reason and like it or not, it was their obligation to follow and enforce them. Once you begin to compromise on those ideals, the end results never turned out well.

He knew all too well to cost of corruption.

The Romulan ships slipped in and out of cloak, appearing just long enough to trip the Hyperion’s sensors, and then slipped back into cloak like taunting ghosts. Stark heard Sulev sighed as the ships blinked off the sensor grid, their cloaks continued to frustrate their efforts. Not far from them, the Section 31 agent sat, paying little attention to them as they went about their work.

Eli couldn’t help but glare at the man, despite orders to provide him with any Intel they managed to gather while monitoring the away team and the systems COMM traffic. That would have been bad enough, but with his blatant attempt to smuggle a restricted species like the Vendor off world, as well as the same attacking Commander Danann, the man should be cooling his heels in the brig at the very least. Yet here he sat, despite having violated at least a half dozen Federation laws and who knows how many Starfleet regulations, the thought alone was enough to piss him off.

He took a deep breath and tried to clear his head, focusing on the away teams transport locks and vitals. To be honest, other than their pulse rates, he didn’t know jack shit what the medical feed represented, but seeing it made him feel better about the situation. At least he could see they were ok, thought he had a bad feeling the proverbial other shoe would drop any moment. His reservations about Rome still loomed, but Lyon had faith in the Captain and despite his own misgivings about Rome, he had faith in the XO.

The sense of dread was shattered on the Hyperion’s bridge as the Heralds engines roared to life. Time had seemed to slow down in the last few moments, having discovered the fate of the Heralds crew just moments before receiving their first message from its perpetrator. Eli choked down the sickened feeling that had knotted itself into his chest at the horrific sight the EMH had broadcast to them. Whatever they had unwittingly released was at the very least indifferent to inflicting terrible suffering to accommodate itself, but if it managed to find its way to a planet…

He shook his head at the thought, that wasn’t going to happen. The Hyperion wouldn’t allow that, no matter what it took. The Herald was a massive slab of a ship, designed to literally slam its way through most obstacles, but even it wouldn’t last long against the ‘Rions weaponry. Regardless, they couldn’t allow the Herald to escape, no matter what it took to stop it. They owed that to the Heralds fallen crew at least.
