AUX Cadet Lorian

Postby Laura M. » Sat Aug 20, 2016 12:29 pm

Lorian is sitting at her desk, opening a beautifully ornamented box made of an exotic, dark shimmering wood. She removes a coarse sheet of paper and flattens it carefully with her hands. Picking up a kind of quill filled with a dark red ink, she begins to write, but her hand is unsteady and she has some difficulties to write down the almost forgotten letters.

She pauses and looks at her PADD, lying invitingly on the desk. No, she will not feed the beast she has begun to fear. Once again, she wonders if it was the right decision to leave the sanctuary of Melusia V, where she lived for almost a century a quiet and protected life amongst the native population. They are a friendly and harmless species, living a simple life of fishing and hunting, and after the horror of the BORG invasion, she was gradually able to recover and fade out the terrible memories.

The few visits she got were old friends from Earth with their families, and later their children and grandchildren. They enjoyed the mild climate and the seclusion of Melusia V for their holidays, but after a couple of weeks, they were always eager to return to their home planets.

Yet one of these children became a highly decorated Starfleet Admiral, and during his last stay, he persuaded her to give up her seclusion and to take over the lounge of an obscure starship not too far away from Melusia V. Oddly enough, she felt quite tempted, the ancient vocation of her people to collect universal knowledge still alive in her subconscious.

But when she came on board, she immediately discovered that things had not improved, quite the reverse. The Federation seems to have lost her visions, the members wasting their funds and resources on petty skirmishes and trivial squabbles. The legendary hunger for discoveries and new encounters was suffocated by a powerful military lobby, who guarantees the survival of a flourishing weapon industry.

Lorian sighs, trying to fix her attention on the paper lying before her on the desk. How could this only have happened? She looks at the PADD, who is part of an all encompassing net of information and exchange. Every reflexion, every impulse is recorded, each train of thought analyzed and evaluated. She has always wondered how a monstrosity like the BORG could have developed, an omniscient central brain, directing and controlling every single individual.

With determination, she takes the PADD and puts it in the lowermost drawer of the desk. Then she picks up her quill and writes.

Wow, Laura.
That was intense! I loved getting some more of Lorian's back-story, too.

Very nice. :) I'm intrigued by a character that seems to reject the big technologies of the 24th Century. I dare say I'd probably do the same. :P

Thanks Aoibhe and Paul! :-)

I hope such an ‚alien‘ who talks like SIRI and only understands the jokes when she has read them three times over (the language seems to have evolved too during the last century ;) ) does somehow fit in your elaborated storyline.

Standing in front of the great panorama window with a breathtaking view over the galaxy, Lorian wonders what may have happened on that moon in the Eta Serpentis system. Absently stirring her ginger tea, she sighs heavily. These short-living species, always playing at sorcerer’s apprentice. They never seem to have enough time to thoroughly verify and re-examine their discoveries before putting them into practice.

She still can remember the near disaster when centuries ago, in a subterranean structure near Geneva in Switzerland on Earth, they inadvertently created a tiny black hole that risked to engulf the whole planet. The Vulcans had to intervene secretly to prevent a global catastrophe. Humans never knew how near they had come to complete extinction.

But Vulcans too experienced terrible setbacks when they started to develop their mind melding techniques. Thousands of Vulcans succumbed to insanity and madness until they were more or less able to control the overwhelming input of alien thoughts and emotions.

But somehow Lorian can well understand their impetuosity. If you have centuries to live like an El-Aurian, it’s so much easier to be patient and meticulous. How astonishing, however, that they never discovered the scientific bases of longevity. In fact, it’s omnipresent in the galaxy - the Axolotl on Earth, the Lo’Argh on Boreth or the Fireworm on Vulcan, to name just a few. Some, like the Vulcans, came very close to the solution and could considerably prolong their life span. But the ultimate key was still far beyond their reach.

Deep in thoughts, Lorian turns away from the window an walks behind the bar. The crew is exhausted and the Captain, although very competent, seems quite young for such a great responsibility. They should have had an extended holiday on a nice planet to recover and relax. Instead, they are sent right on the next mission, with all the doubts and unanswered questions still in their minds. The last she can do for the crew is to offer them a quiet, comfortable place to decompress.

The children are sitting in a circle around her on the carpet, listening spellbound to the fairytale story that Lorian is telling them with appropriate gestures and facial expressions. The candlelight conjures up a cozy atmosphere, creating a protected niche of security and comfort. In imaginative and colourful pictures she describes how Rapunzel, living secluded and isolated in a high tower, lets her long hair down the window to enable her dashing suitor to climb up to her room.

After their overburdened parents tried with little success to calm them down, Lorian proposed to gather the frightened and confused children of the crew in the lounge, in order to distract and reassure them. Of course she has to attenuate the scary parts of the story and remodel it somehow into an optimistic tale about how to find a way out of a frightening, seemingly hopeless situation. To cheer the children up, she inserts a lot of funny, comical details and changes the original creepy sorceress into a grumpy old aunt, a little bit too pernickety about her flowerbeds.

While she is talking, her thoughts wander to the strange creature outside the ship. She has a vague recollection of a story some friend of her grandfather once told. Having visited hundreds of planets and collected thousands of stories, most of them mere legends, he was a welcomed guest in her grandparents’ home. She remembers him talking about a very similar being, who was eternalised in the narratives of an obscure species. Maybe her faint knowledge of the creature can somehow help the crew to find a way out of this trap. She should talk to Captain Sumner as soon as possible!

„And then… what happened then?“

Wide-eyed, the children are looking at her, waiting in suspense. Having been briefly distracted, Lorian concentrates again on her fairytale.

„Well, now… having lost her beautiful, shiny hair, Rapunzel found her new haircut extremely practical. And so she lived happily… „
