We must seem like children to their eyes... yet we've explored more of the galaxy than they could imagine. Still.. it's the chance of a lifetime to be the first aliens they come into contact with.
The ones we met seem curious, gentle.. it's hard to imagine that they've just had a terrorist attack. Why does it seem like every other world we encounter has one set of people trying to kill another? Is that a universal trait, or just our luck of the draw? And yet.. even though they just lost thousands of people to a thermonuclear bomb.. they still somehow retained their sense of humour and decency.

I wish I could say the same for the Federation.. Kemocite?? No wonder both the Federation and the Romulans are so interested in this world.. We're not here just for the sake of exploration.. we're here because they have something that we want.
It didn't actually surprise her though.. that the Federation would try to absorb a world that had a much coveted resource. And if they don't join the Federation..? ....

"That's the last of it, Doctor." Crewman Fields ticked the last of the crates of Hyronalin off of the requisition list and set the PADD on her desk. Isabelle nodded, bringing herself back to the situation at hand. She'd been deep in thought, writing up the report on the D'rell when the crewman knocked on her office door. She still had so much more to learn about them.. the report she was writing had only scratched the surface so far. She wanted to know everything about their medical knowledge, physiology, what kind of medical advances they'd achieved.. she wanted to spend hours, days learning from them. If all went well, hopefully she'd get that opportunity. If there were no more attacks, if the Romulans behaved themselves...if...

She stood up, taking the PADD off of her desk and signing it. "Thank you Crewman. I'll pass that along to OPS." She stepped out into sickbay, Her team was busy milling around, getting ready to go down to the planet if needed. Some were excited about the prospect of visiting a new planet, some were nervous about the presence of the Romulans, and the situation that required the radiation meds in the first place. None of them knew about the Kemocite.. She didn't want to shatter whatever idealism they had left about this new planet so soon; she hadn't wanted to shatter her own either.. and she wished Rome hadn't mentioned that part. It could affect how they dealt with them. Maybe some things should have been left to command's ears only..

Sure, let's go with that :D I might have misinterpreted that during mission, but it doesn't really matter, she's keeping it to herself anyway..

“This is not real..”

Voices, a cloud composed of floating bodies, flaming worlds...

It couldn't be real, any of it. The triolic waves.. the nebula.. It all had to be messing with their minds somehow. Heightened activity in the amigdala and elevated cortisol levels amongst the crew. Fear and Stress responses. First signs of damage from triolic waves. She wasn't hearing voices.. so far. She could mostly concentrate on the situation at hand. That was a good sign, wasn't it?

This is not real.

Her mind went back to her medical training.. Project an aura of calm even when everyone's panicking around you. Even if.. you're not calm inside, yourself. She breathed through the fear, telling herself it was going to be ok.. Hadn't they been through an entire war together? Countless dangerous missions? This was nothing but a few ghosts. Breathe.. push down the fear. She needed to stay calm in case the crew needed her..

She rubbed the ring on her left hand with her thumb.. It calmed her, acted as a touchstone. She took a breath, thinking of happier things..

This is not real...

The Vision

Postby Babette C » Tue Nov 08, 2016 4:25 pm

The Vision

Light, high pitched laughter. It came from up ahead in the darkness. She felt compelled to follow, to go find it.

The laughter continued, "Come on.. this way! Let's play.." The child's voice urged her down the corridor. She kept going, the voice just ahead. The sound of running footsteps accompanied the voice, moving quickly away from her. She pursued as quickly as she could, with just her flashlight to guide her. "I'm coming.. wait.." she called out ahead, entreating the owner of the voice to slow down.

She turned the corner. A soft light came from up ahead.. even though somewhere in another part of her mind, she knew the lights on the ship were down. That other part of her mind also knew that she was supposed to be on the Bridge, but being here seemed more important, even though she didn't know why. She moved towards the pool of light, still following the footsteps. The owner of the small feet, who had been previously running away from her, was now coming back in her direction. "Come on".. the childish voice called out to her. She got closer, and the figure ran into the light.. It was a child, about five years old. Big, clear blue eyes gazed back at her under wisps of strawberry blond hair.

She stared in wonder and her fingers went limp, letting her flashlight fall to the floor. "Who.. who are you?" Even as she formed the question, she knew the answer. It was an almost instant, visceral recognition.

The child giggled and offered a hand, saying matter-of-factly, "You know who I am. C'mon, let's play.."

She blinked, and when she opened her eyes, the corridor was pitch black again. She quickly knelt down to pick up the flashlight again with trembling fingers, and swept the beam towards where the child had been standing. But the space in front of her was empty and the child was gone. She searched around in confusion, shining her light throughout the corridor, but there was no trace.. just an echo of the child's voice in her mind..

We've safely made it out of the nebula, but not unscathed. The Hyronalin inoculations protected the crew from the worst effects of triolic waves, but many of the crew still reported hallucinations and visions caused by the beings inside of the nebula. Several of the hallucinations have been related to previous experiences and memories, suggesting that the beings were telepathic and able to pull images out of victims' minds and bring them to life via the ships' holographic grid. But not all of the hallucinations were memories of the past. Some of them were hopes and dreams for the future as well...
