There is so much in this log that is giving me college flash backs. So real, Shawna.
Great writing, as always!

Stardate 11612.15

It's hard to focus on having a good time when a big old bombshell gets dropped and when several key members of said bombshell are a little...emotionally discombobulated. She picks at her food, sneaks glances at Trevanion, at Sumner, occasionally at Ria. The Starfleet members aren't as strict about some of the rules and rituals as the Riani, but still, the men aren't to engage the women-or-what-have-you, so she can feel Ensign Dimitriou's desire to communicate with her than actually seeing or hearing anything. Oleg's just going to have to wait until this whole thing is over. Hopefully Mac isn't going to get drunk this time, although at this rate, Raqiin would be hard-pressed to say no to sharing another bottle. Something stronger this time, perhaps.

The captain is not happy about this. The captain is going to cause some kind of scene, and Raqiin can't tell if it's going to be a scene that's handled diplomatically as a subtle but very clear 'fuck you', or a scene that's going to be a storm of epic proportions. And either way, for once? Raqiin agrees. These people, this princess, is really pushing it all too far. They are to be escorted and treated as dignitaries. Starfleet is not supposed to bow down to her whims, nor does someone get traded for an ornamental bowl. They could have just as easily stayed on their own ships while getting escorted.

The real question is whether to let the captain go all-out or if Raqiin should try and temper things in her own fumbling diplomatic way. She has yet to talk to the princess herself, and she feels like there has got to be some kind of compromise. If Starfleet can try to find some kind of cure for the royal disease, then Ria wouldn't necessarily feel the need to go running off hither and thither in search of a proper mate. Should she say something? Maybe she should say something.

In the meantime, she really has to wonder just what exactly Trev said to Ria...

Mac and Trev were doing whatever weird hookup-y thing they were doing, and the booze was freely flowing, and Mac kept giving Raqiin significant looks in between. So yes. Yes, tonight was a good night to get drunk. The morning would suck, but she at least knew it was coming.

She extracted herself from that bout of embarrassment only to find herself in a new bout of embarrassment. "I am so sorry about spitting rancid kanar all over you, which is definitely a sentence I never thought I'd be saying."

Oleg waved off her concerns, his jacket hanging off the back of a chair. "It will come out."

"We'll probably be getting new dress uniforms soon anyway. I've seen some prototypes. They're going to be awesome. Maybe not quite in the awe-inspiring way that word is usually meant as, but...good, they'll be good. I won't look like a ghost! It'll be good."

"Is that so?" He seemed entertained by her loose lips in her tipsy state. She did have a habit of babbling even when stone sober, but the rambling got a little more meandering.

"I'm gonna give mine a personal touch. Something from home, I think. Something...something me. I don't know what, yet. I don't know what's really me sometimes. Mac should get those shoulder things. Dangly shoulder things. I think she'd look good with the shoulder dangles. Regal! What do you need?"

"Me?" He blinked, a startled smile under his moustache. "I'm just an ensign; I don't think I need a personal touch."

"No no no! That's the beauty of it! Everyone should have a say, a, a, a detail they can add to make it just theirs! Something little. What's something you'd change about it?"

"Well...I was never a big fan of the material... But as a personal touch?" His look was far away for a few moments before his shook his head, fondly refocusing on the science officer. "I'd have to give it some thought. Like you."

The haze of alcohol made her empathic ability a little dulled. She could still get the sense of...nostalgia? Like a whiff of melancholy off him. She frowned and motioned to his glass. "Lemmie get you another one."

He raised a hand. "No need. I think I'm at my limit. I try very hard not to go overboard."

Her frown remained. "I'm going overboard. I look like a lush!"

"Raqiin," Oleg started with a laugh, reaching over to pat a hand over hers, "you are doing and look like no such thing. I promise you, Mac looks worse. Besides, the color to your cheeks is rather adorable."

His hand stayed, warm. She considered their touch, considered distantly Mac's nudging. Whatever color there was to her cheeks, it intensified. Despite babbling, it was hard to find words. "You're a man, right?" she asked suddenly.

"I like to think so," he replied wryly.

"Why do some men have to act the way men do?"

"I...don't know what you mean. You've been spending too much time around the Riani, I think."

She shook her head, dislodged hair hovering around her head for a moment before settling down by her cheeks. "I mean...I mean having seems to mean a lot to you. General you! Not you you. Human man you. Possessing? Wanting." Oleg thankfully stayed quiet while she tried to sort out what she meant. "Like you know people aren't things, right? You you, you know that, but general you is a little harder to pin down."

"Is this about Trevanion?" Oleg had a creeping sense of dread. "...Is this about me?"

"It's not about anyone! It's not--not anyone on the ship. I mean, not really--I mean it's kind of about us and kind of about him and kind of about this guy that hurt me in the Academy who can't take no for an answer and I guess that's a lot why relationships are really scary and seem kind of fake or dangerous or whatever to me which is why I don't talk about us." Her stalks skewed slowly askance, eyes wide. "...Did I say that out loud?"

"...About not talking about us because someone I have a very intense desire to beat senseless hurt you?"

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. You said that out loud."

"Oh. Whoops."

They sat in an increasingly awkward silence for a few moments before he cleared his throat and removed his hand from hers hesitantly. "Ma'am--"

"You're older than I am," she interjected with a pout, her bare hand curling into a loose fist, "don't 'ma'am' me."

"You're also my superior officer by several ranks."

"...Right."

"Raqiin," he started again, quiet but more earnest, "you know I would never hurt you. Right? I would never do anything I thought might hurt you in any way. And if being around me is harmful to your well-being--"

"Oleg, no," she said, slumping forward, reaching across the table for him in a childish, drunken manner. "That's not what I mean at all. I'm sorry I'm so bad with words! I'm awful at words! I'm awful at you and at guys and relationships I guess? Don't hate me?"

"Of course I don't hate you. Listen, why don't I--" He hesitated. "--escort you to your quarters. It's getting late, and you're quite inebriated. I insist. You probably aren't even going to remember this conversation in the morning as it is."

"One more for the road...?"

He sighed. "All right. Just one more for you, then you're getting cut off. And you're going to bed." He felt it would be rude to remind her, or assure her, that she would be going to bed alone.

Snow

It'd be great to hear back from you. You must have recovered well from what happened if you got another promotion under your belt! Don't ask me how I know; I've got my sources... (Jk, I check the Starfleet personnel database now and again to catch up on people.) Don't let all that power go to your head.

I was really worried when you got hurt. I wanted to get over to the station, take some leave to check on you, but the detour was just too far. And they weren't exactly going to let tourists in an active crime scene, but you know how resourceful I can be! But duty is duty. Hey, we'll be hanging around the Hromi Cluster soon if you're in the area. Drop me a line!

Happy

Raqiin blew a huff of air as she set down the PADD, blinking message now read. She'd known some really, truly fantastic men in her life, but sometimes it was just the one who seemed to ruin everything juuuust enough. Oleg was a good man, though. A good and lonely man. A good and lonely man who she figured made the wrong choice of person to so clearly fall for.

She wasn't crass enough to ask about his wife, of course. And she wasn't comfortable enough with herself to be able to talk about whatever kind of relationship-sort-of-thing they had going on, even (apparently) while drunk. It did seem as though he'd been courting her for quite some time, with mixed results, and yet refused to give up. Was there for her when she needed him, and gave her space when she requested it.

Was she really about to let the likes of Zeller Moore keep her relationships in a perpetual hangup? Just because one stupid man from the Academy couldn't let her go? Oleg had made it clear that he thought the idea of Zel was enough to punch him in the face, as someone who 'hurt' her. She wasn't even sure she could call it that. It was just...strange, and unsettling, and a little bit frightening. Right up until graduation, and past it, never getting the hint, never taking 'no' for any kind of answer. Never, and it was a terrible thought to have, moving on to obsessing over someone else. At least he was far away, had always been a far enough distance that their ships never had reason to get in contact. In some sick way, she even thought the idea of letting Oleg and Zel meet was entertaining, in a way that Zel would get his backside trounced. But that would be inviting violence and conflict, and it would never happen on her watch.

Maybe one day she'd tell Oleg the story, and maybe she could figure out a way to stop letting it get to her, to break from this fear and move along. It wasn't going to be now, though. Not while decompressing from the Riani, not while dealing with Zel's latest letter, not while there were still so many unknowns. Tony and Henry were still out there with a mission, and even though she wasn't supposed to get caught up in it--what would happen if they started something, and then something happened to her? Better...better to be sure.

Yeah. She'd keep telling herself that.

I'm enthralled, as always, Shawna.
I greatly admire your ability to convey tone, and the Austen-esque manner in which you deal with Raq's inner voice.

Marvelous! Capital!
